The Johari Window model: A Tool for Self-Awareness and Personal Growth

The Johari Window is a psychological model that helps individuals and teams enhance self-awareness, uncover blind spots, and build better communication and personal growth. Developed by psychologists Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham in 1955, the model is named after a combination of their first names. It is designed to improve self-awareness, mutual understanding, and communication among individuals within a group.

The Johari Window is divided into four quadrants, each representing
different aspects of our self-awareness:

  • Open Self (Known to Self and Others): This quadrant represents the information about us that both we and others are aware of. This can include our behaviors, attitudes, skills, and public knowledge. Sharing and receiving feedback in this area can strengthen relationships and trust.

  • Blind Self (Unknown to Self, Known to Others): This area contains aspects of us that we may not be aware of, but others can see. This could include habits, mannerisms, or even strengths and weaknesses that we might not recognize. Feedback from others can help us become aware of these blind spots.

  • Hidden Self (Known to Self, Unknown to Others): This quadrant includes information that we know about ourselves but choose not to reveal to others. It may contain personal experiences, fears, or private thoughts that we prefer to keep to ourselves. Expanding this area by sharing with others can lead to deeper connections and understanding.

  • Unknown Self (Unknown to Self and Others): This area represents the aspects of ourselves that neither we nor others are aware of. This could include untapped potential, unconscious thoughts, or undiscovered talents. Exploring this area often requires self-reflection, new experiences, and feedback from others.
